"oh no."

she had invited miss morningstar with the intention of partaking in tea, treats and light conversation. cait had scheduled such an occurrence well in advance and had painstakingly prepared her studio apartment to accommodate her important guest.

"how did you all even get in here?"

unfortunately it appeared as though she had forgotten to secure the door prior to her taking her leave. she'd only realize her folly when she escorted the council woman to the door and discovered it was ajar with a curious amount of noise originating from within. to her dismay no less than six of her pokemon were rummaging about inside, the lot making a terrible mess of the place as they scurried to and fro.

"how - "

she'd stand at the doorway and then turned sharply to both face address the council woman, her cheeks warm as she attempted to block the rampaging babes from view as they pressed onward with making a mess of her home.

"i'm so sorry, miss morningstar. i - well - i - "

[attr="class","freypost"]she's been looking forward to her meeting with the gym leader. though she hasn't personally made the acquaintance of the woman, she's heard nothing but good things about her work ethic and her kindness to the people of mauville. the general consensus is that the air has been cleaner since her reconstruction of the gym.

but freya isn't here to discuss the gym; it's a short meet and greet, a necessary thing (she's come to realize). in a time of war, people need to be recognized for their efforts, commended on their strength.

she arrives on dragonback, just outside the city so lyune doesn't have to worry about maneuvering through the narrow streets of mauville. cait is there to greet her, and the two exchange casual conversation on the short walk to her studio apartment.

the semi-permanent lilac bruises under her eyes are a bit less noticeable now that she's smiling, and she gives into the conversation, relaxing visibly by the minute. she's looking forward to cait's home-brewed tea, though the promise of paradise is cut short as they approach her apartment.

she laughs. she can't help herself. well, i'd probably tense up from too much relaxing eventually. though cait tries to hide it, freya stands on her toes to peer past her and into the apartment. she raises a hand to her mouth to cover her smile, though the damage has already been done.

"please," she says, "there's no need to fret. my salandit's been proving herself to be a handful. she melted one of my favorite bows just a few days ago after throwing a temper tantrum."

she nods expectantly towards the half-ajar door. "we might want to wrangle them before they can do anymore damage."

cait shook her head the moment miss morningstar volunteered her services.

"oh - it's perfectly alright. i can manage this on my own."

'hopefully.'

the gym leader was sorely tempted to simply shut the door and deal with the mess at a later hour. she turned on a dime instead of doing so, the expression upon her face notably stern as she addressed the poorly behaved lot.

"bad," she said. "bad!"

her tone captured their attention, every single one of them stiffening briefly as they peered wide eyed at the woman as she shook a finger in their general direction.

"you're all in trouble - every single one of you! you know better!"

munchlax appeared unperturbed by the scolding, merely rubbing her sizable belly as her peers proceeded to erupt into tears whilst bawling profusely.

"gods," cait huffed, exasperated.

the woman entered the studio and began to sweep them into her arms, though she only succeeded at collecting pichu and gothita; their combined shrieks positively deafening as they flailed within her grip.

[attr="class","freypost"]while she commends the gym leader for trying to heft all the responsibility on her shoulders, there's no way she could deal with six meddlesome infant pokemon. freya would be remiss if she didn't try to help her.

so she neatly follows her through the door and closes it gently behind her. the last thing they want is one of the toddlers escaping, which coincidentally, seemed exactly like what her cleffa and skitty were attempting to accomplish.

the two look up guiltily at freya. the skitty scampers off immediately, tail flicking as she dives behind an upturned chair. "oh dear," freya says when she finally sees the amount of damage the pokemon have done. she reaches down and scoops up the cleffa in her arms, wincing as the wails of the other pokemon rise.

i could never do this, she thinks. she holds the cleffa out to cait. "do you have their pokeballs on you? what's the plan, miss. alfric?" she asks, good-natured smile twitching at her lips.

"we're going to have to do things the usual way, i'm afraid."

their capsules were located in the storage room of the gym; which meant she'd have to collect the key - enter the room - locate them - and come back here. and there was a good chance that the babes would either make more of a mess or flee into the vibrant, green depths of the gym.

"can you watch them for a little while? i'll need kangaskhan for this."

she gently deposited her two squealing infants onto the bed, a frown tugging at the corners of her lips as she did so.

"she'll be able to keep them in her pouch and bring them back to their caretakers."

cait released a quiet sigh as she made her way to the tiny kitchen area and dug into the contents of a single drawer.

"with so many pokemon running around 'accidents' tend to happen."

those 'accidents' being several of the babes who had had a hand in making a mess of her studio.

"i typically donate the eggs to the league so they can find their own homes but some tend to hatch earlier than expected. so i keep them."

she retrieved several plain binkies and stuffed them into the mouths of pichu, gothita and cleffa - their cries instantaneously silenced as a result.

"they're flavored," cait informed, reclaiming the quieted cleffa with a tender smile. "works like a charm."

she coddles the cleffa closer to her while cait rummages around in her drawers, though mostly it's to conceal that same amused smile she can't seem to keep off her lips. regardless of what their original plans had been, she's enjoying her time.

though she's come to the assumption that cait is a genuine person, and that she would have probably drawn the same conclusion over tea and snacks, there's something satisfying about watching the woman work in her element.

she's kind to her pokemon, patient with them.

"of course i can watch them." she grabs a pokeball from her necklace and releases aeris.

the baby pokemon startle at the sudden appearance of the snakelike pokemon, but aeris immediately starts cooing, motherly instincts taking over as she reaches with her tail towards cait's munchlax.

she nods. "between running a gym and taking care of newly hatched pokemon, you must have your hands full." she hands over the cleffa and smiles down at the infant as it suckles at the binkie.

the rest of the child pokemon are more or less under control. it's amazing what the presence of a couple of adult figures, and an adult pokemon, are doing to subdue them.

"we'll be fine while you fetch what you need." she sits cross-legged on the ground then and coos at a cacnea hiding behind the arm of a couch. the cactus pokemon totters nervously and looks up at cait.

literally it's just going to be cait's presence that keeps them subdued.....

im ready for all hell to break loose

cait eyes her cacnea, her eyebrows raising high upon her forehead as she adopts a stern tone.

"be a good girl for miss morningstar while i'm away."

she glances around the messy apartment, considering for a moment whether or not she should truly take leave of the cramped yet surprisingly cozy space that had been provided.

"we're all family here," she said. "i don't really do everything on my own. and it's really no different from where i come from. both humans and pokemon work together to maintain the alfric households in fortree."

cait said everything in a matter-of-fact way as she was on her way to taking her leave. she cared deeply for her pokemon and played her part at ensuring everything was as it should be. her father and mother did the same in fortree and she simply followed their example.

"i'll be right back. i promise."

she promptly made her exit, hurrying herself down a path edged by shrubbery toward where her kangaskhan was likely to reside.

[attr="class","freypost"]aeris' presence in the room is enough for freya to lapse into a sense of false security. the only time she's truly ever around newly hatched pokemon is when she's checking in on her estate's breeding grounds. and, surrounded by dragonkin, the infants learn their place rather quickly.

unfortunately, not even two minutes pass after cait leaves does freya realize she's lost sight of the cacnea. she stands up hurriedly, jostling the cleffa in her arms. the baby's binkie falls from its mouth and it instantly starts wailing.

freya winces. pichu and gothita stare with their heads tilted, still suckling at their own toys. freya hefts cleffa into her left arm and leans down to pick up the binkie from where it had fallen.

aeris lets out a startled yelp just as cait's cacnea rounds around a corner, legs tucked and arms rolling over the ground. it collides into freya and she stumbles back, swearing, raising an arm to her bruised lip.

munchlax laughs and she and the skitty chase after the rolling cacnea. a piece of upturned pottery gets crushed under the rampaging pokemon and freya swears again, fumbling with cleffa's binkie.

"aeris, help. please." but as soon as the dragon slithers forward, pichu and gothita cry out in fear and stumble to the far corners of the room.

cait returned to more of a mess, no less than six troublesome babes and a disheveled morningstar. it was odd to see the woman in such a state, though she had expected her to be overwhelmed by the half-dozen of prepubescent pokemon within minutes following her departure.

'sacrifices must be made for the greater good,' she reasoned.

the young woman gave a solemn nod.

"they're in here, kangaskhan. i'll hand them over."

kangaskhan settled at the doorway, her own son nestled comfortably within the confines of her large pouch. cait plucked up the children one by one before surrendering them to the normal-type, the large and motherly creature appearing nonpulsed by their excessive wriggling.

"thank you so much, miss morningstar. you know how infants are. cute but troublesome."

she bid the normal-type a farewell before shutting the door, her gaze shifting to the spilled soil that originated from a thoroughly shattered pot of hardened clay.

"i'll get the broom," she sighed, exasperated.
